Deeply saddened and shocked to hear of Graham's passing. He and I came out of Art Center and showed up in NYC around the same time, we moved in similar freelance photo circles that have consistently intersected over the past few decades. His warm smile and embracing greetings were always a constant as our paths crossed in various venues. I was not aware that he was with the Morgan library until I attended a cultural heritage seminar there a couple of years ago, and was once again accosted by that giant grin and warm handshake. "i was hoping that was the same you on the attendance sheet we made!!!.." is what he said. And biking past the library several times over the last years, i always meant to stop in to say hi again... .
Many years ago, it just happened that he and my wife were in a citizen pruners class together, offered by the city, it encouraged people to become amateur arborists and tend to trees in stress in their own neighborhoods. As licensed citizen pruners, my wife set forth to save the trees while Graham took on the challenge of planting new trees on his block , trees to fill the empty and abandoned sidewalk pots around his building. I am sure those trees are still there. I can't look at sidewalk tree without thinking of Graham and his citizen pruner license!!!
I will certainly be missing those chance encounters, and I bid my heartfelt condolences to the family of a true and fine gentleman.
As an aside, i too drove an MG at Art Center, but mine was given over to more practical considerations, and I was always amazed when Graham reaffirmed to me the continued possession of his own, (or two it seems in the photos.)
